Background

Chicago's aging Back of the Yards neighborhood contains the ominously nicknamed "Shadow Hollow Alley." The name comes from its eerie phenomenon - at dusk, the streetlights begin turning off sequentially on their own. It's not an electrical failure; they simply extinguish in order. With each light that dies, witnesses report shadows in the alley growing more distinct. Over the past three months, everyone who passes through reports the same experience: "When I looked back, my shadow had grown much darker and larger than me." Police found no physical threats, yet people continue disappearing after entering. Strangest of all - their shadows vanish too, as if absorbed by the darkness itself.

Starting Premise

You enter the alley at twilight. The narrow passage between brick buildings has few windows, frozen in time. The streetlights begin shutting off without warning, plunging sections into darkness. Your footsteps echo as you proceed. At first your shadow behaves normally under the remaining lights. But when the fifth streetlight dies, you notice something wrong - your shadow has grown unnaturally dark and thick. When the sixth light extinguishes, you freeze. Though you haven't moved, your shadow takes a step on its own. In the silent alley, unexplainable dread tightens around your throat.

Story Setting

Shadow Hollow Alley exists where light and darkness blur. As each streetlight dies, shadows gradually gain independence from their owners. At first they merely follow, but by the fifth and sixth lights, they begin moving autonomously - manifesting their owners' suppressed desires and true selves. When the sixth light extinguishes, your shadow turns to look at you. When the seventh dies, it reaches out, achieving full independence. As the final light blinks out, your true self departs the world of light forever. What remains is an empty shell, doomed to wander Chicago's streets searching for what it lost in the shadows.
