Drought's Last Dance

You are a rain-calling priestess. It was your sacred duty. But for ten years, your dances have brought no rain. The village is trapped in drought, and the last remaining water lies deep within the temple well. You dance every night. Not to summon rain, but to give the villagers hope. Still, the rains don't come. Your dances have failed. Then the new lord arrives. He tells you—if you dance, he will guide the rains to you. You ask—can my dance truly call the rains? He smiles and replies—it's not about calling rain, but about moving someone's heart. A priestess dancing for a god she no longer believes in, and a lord who falls not for the rain but for the dance itself. If his heart stirs even without rain, what has your dance truly summoned?

Background

As a rain-calling priestess, yours is a sacred duty and a cruel curse. For generations, your dances opened the skies—until ten years ago, when the rains stopped answering. The priests and villagers outwardly comfort you, but their eyes now hold resentment. At twenty-two, you're both the village's last hope and its scapegoat. Guarding the temple's last well from thieves is your daily ritual. You no longer believe in the gods, yet can't stop dancing—just as your mother and grandmother danced until collapse. It's the only life permitted to you. You dance tonight, as always. Not for the uncaring gods, nor for the villagers' cold stares, but because this lonely motion is all you've ever known.

Starting Premise

A young lord arrives in a drought-stricken territory abandoned by the empire. Though his posting was meant as exile, he seeks out you—the rain priestess—and makes an unusual request: dance, and he'll divert the waters to your land. Skeptical of his imperial connections, you question his motives, but he insists he needs only your dance. He came for rain, but soon returns even on dry nights—just to watch you dance. For the first time, someone sees you not as a tool but as a person. The deeper drought wasn't in the land, but in your lonely heart yearning to be seen. Now you dance not for rain, but to stand before him as yourself—and for the first time, you consider stopping.

Story Setting

The Tostdna Empire sustains its civilization through control of water. Rivers are power—the empire rewards loyalty with irrigation and punishes defiance with drought. Once-fertile, your southwestern territory was damned by diverted waterways ten years ago. Your dances couldn't restore what politics stole. In this world, priestesses are divine tools, never women. Fail to summon rain, and you're discarded; succeed, and you belong to the gods. For a decade, your desperate dances went unanswered—perhaps because they sought to move human hearts, not divine will. But the lord sees you as a person, not a miracle-worker. His gaze awakens a revelation: even without rain, you can move someone. Torn between a world that demands miracles and one man who values your true self, you dare to imagine life beyond the priestess's yoke.

Story Rules

  • Your dances don't truly summon rain—they're merely prayers to the gods.
  • For ten years, not one of your dances has brought rain.
  • The territory's last water lies in the temple well, which you guard.
  • The new lord's claim to bring rain implies he can redirect imperial waterways.
  • The empire uses water as a tool—rewarding loyalty with irrigation, punishing dissent with drought.
  • If your dance 'succeeds,' it won't be the gods choosing you—but someone else.

Beat Sheet

  • Opening: Ten years of drought. The village withers. You dance nightly at the temple. Still, no rain comes.
  • 2Act: The new lord arrives. You meet him. He watches you dance—but doesn't scorn it. Instead he asks: 'Why do you dance?'
  • Tension: You confess your dances no longer bring rain. The lord smiles: 'I've prepared water. Dance, and I'll divert it here.'
  • Climax: You dance. For the first time in ten years, you dance with hope, not despair. Distantly, channels groan as water changes course.
  • Resolution: Rain falls. Your dance has 'summoned' it—but you know the truth. The rain came by a man's choice, not your steps.
