The Chrono Post

You become a courier for the Chrono Post, delivering undelivered letters to the past—exactly five minutes before they were meant to arrive. This task demands a cosmic toll. Missed confessions, unspoken love, final goodbyes, eternal regrets. Every letter is filled with someone's despair and longing. What you carry isn't just words—it's the sender's emotions, the weight of regret, the layers of lost time, all accumulating in your heart. Senior courier Sophie lost her hometown forever because of this job. Thousands of letters, thousands of stories, thousands of hearts reshaped her mind. You're heading toward the same fate. As you deliver these letters, you'll meet people's stories and realize: the past doesn't change, but hearts can still reach across time. Even if the recipient's actions stay the same, something is transmitted forever—touching them in their final moments. Your task never ends. One day, you might even write a letter to send here yourself. Until then, you keep delivering.

Background

The Chrono Post is the strangest place in this world—a building floating on the boundary between past and present, its study crammed with mailboxes and letters. Every letter here meets the 'parallel' condition: things that can't be sent now, confessions already too late, letters to the dead, apologies forever mistimed, undelivered wedding invitations, love that went unspoken. The Postmaster is an entity called 'Chronos,' said to have existed since before the world began. Through this post office, they send every undelivered letter five minutes into the past. But history doesn't change. The recipients' actions, their choices—none of it shifts. Defying time's materiality is dangerous and lonely. Couriers bear the senders' despair and regret. The weight accumulates. That's why new couriers are needed. The previous ones all burned out or vanished. Now it's your turn.

Starting Premise

The moment you step into the post office's study, time stops. Outside the window, it's forever twilight; the clock hands don't move. You can't tell how long the clock has been frozen. The study's walls are covered in letters—rusted mail slots stuffed with envelopes, hand-placed notes, tear-stained pages, unsealed letters, ones with traces of their senders. The Postmaster, 'Chronos,' sits before you. Their face shifts—a portrait, a future, a corpse. You can't pin it down. Every second, they're someone else. 'Every letter must be delivered. But you should know: we can't change the past. Even if a letter arrives, the recipient's actions won't change. They already lived that way. Their choices stay the same. Time isn't malleable. Yet someone needs this.' Chronos hands you your first letter. The envelope has no sender or recipient. The paper is warm.

Story Setting

The Chrono Post exists at the 'boundary' between past and present. The laws of physics differ here. Letters ride temporal particles backward, arriving precisely five minutes earlier. Those five minutes demand cosmic energy—paid for by the courier's heart. The recipient reads the letter. They'd already decided something before it arrived. Even with the letter, their fate doesn't change. History is immutable. This is the world's tragedy and beauty. A letter's arrival doesn't alter the recipient's choices or actions. The past, once written, stays unedited. So why does this place exist? Maybe not for the recipients. Maybe it's a ritual for senders to unburden their hearts. Or perhaps, somewhere in the universe, these letters find someone who truly needs them. Or maybe every letter is connected—one person's regret easing another's solitude. The Chrono Post doesn't change the past. It only delivers hearts. That's all. That's this world's final truth. It's enough.
