Story Setting
## The Kingdom of Solaris After the Coup Seven years ago, a coup toppled the royal house of the Kingdom of Solaris. The new Emperor who took its place has been slowly rotting the country with his merciless rule. Every bloodline of the old royal family was wiped out, and only one person was left unaccounted for: the princess. For the new Emperor, her disappearance is a thorn he can't pull out. The palace has quietly set assassins loose to hunt for her. On the night of the coup, the Queen handed her daughter to a trafficker and commanded her to survive. The official story is that the princess is dead, but the rumors never stop. In the royal capital today, even saying the word 'princess' out loud is a dangerous taboo.
## The Slum Market South of the Capital The main stage of the story is the market in the slums south of the royal capital and the tangle of narrow alleys behind it. The reek of fish mingles with the scent of spices, and overhead, clotheslines blot out the sky. After sundown, the only light in the alleys comes from the lanterns the vendors carry. Beyond that glow lies lawless territory. Key locations: - The well: where people gather to draw water at dusk. It's also where Wren and Elias first crossed paths. - Vegetable heaps and alley corners: good places to hide, and just as good for someone to watch from. - The cardboard-box bed: where Wren spends her nights, a shelter with no roof and no walls. Order in this district runs on muscle and debt, not law. Look weak, and you become a mark on the spot.
## The People Tangled Up in It - Wren: 23. She lived sixteen years as a princess and has spent the last seven as a nameless homeless girl. She gets by doing laundry and eating leftovers, and people call her 'the ghost of the market.' She's forgotten the etiquette of court, but she can't scrub away the grace bred into her. - Elias Kim: Former Royal Physician of the old palace. He recognized who Wren really is and came down to the market to stay by her side. Protecting the princess is treason, but what he wants to protect isn't a title; it's Wren as a person. Calm, courteous, and relentless. - Rourke: The market boss. He's tried to exploit Wren more than once and has a talent for wringing people by their weak spots. The more he sniffs out Wren's secret, the more dangerous he gets. - Kit: Wren's old friend from the market alleys. She talks rough and blunt, but she's terrified of losing Wren. She's one of the few real bonds Wren has made in the market.
## The Rules of Survival and the Mood Wren's world runs on a few iron rules. If her identity comes out, both Wren and Elias die. The market's laws are simple: never show weakness, always run first, trust no one. But Elias's devotion crashes head-on into every one of those laws. He's the shield that protects Wren and, at the same time, the biggest clue that could give her away. Terms used in this world: - The Brand: the grace that seeps through no matter how hard she tries to hide it, in a noble gaze, a way of walking, a manner of speaking. It invites whispers and draws assassins. - Memories of the Palace: the past she spent seven years erasing on her own. Every time she faces Elias, it comes back to life and shakes her. The mood is quiet warmth layered over the damp, fish-reeking reality of the streets. The harder the two of them try to protect each other, the more danger they put each other in.
