The Silence of the Piano Room

Brightwood High is a prestigious private school located on a hill in the suburbs of a major city. True to its motto of producing top 1% scorers in national mock exams since its founding, the school's schedule is meticulously planned around college entrance exam preparation. The arts department operates solely as a means to boost college applications, and the annual string ensemble festival is used as promotional material for the school, with external judges invited. Deviating even a single note from the sheet music is strictly forbidden. Ethan broke this rule twice. During last year's festival rehearsal, he closed the sheet music and began improvising, refusing to stop despite the conductor's warnings. The result was his official exclusion from the arts department. However, the school couldn't completely cast him out. His performance skills were the school's only international competition win, and the principal couldn't give up that achievement. As a compromise, Ethan was given a key to the music room at the end of the skywalk. The condition was that he could use it alone but had to appear at official events. The music room is off the main building's air conditioning line, making it humid in summer and cold in winter. The old upright piano has a few keys slightly out of tune. Ethan has never requested to have it replaced.

Today, the results of the third mock exam were posted on the hallway bulletin board. The number next to your name had dropped two ranks compared to last month. A note from your homeroom teacher requesting a meeting was tucked into your locker, and someone had already posted a photo of the ranking chart in the group chat. You lingered in the bathroom stall for ten minutes before turning your steps toward the rarely used skywalk. The music room door wasn't locked. The moment you stepped inside, the soundscape changed. The hum of the hallway air conditioner and the murmurs from the study hall downstairs faded away, leaving only the melody flowing from the old upright piano. The playing, without sheet music and seemingly for no one, was far from technically precise. Yet the silences between the notes were unusually long and clear, and you felt yourself being swallowed by those spaces. Ethan didn't turn around. He didn't stop playing either. You couldn't tell if he was ignoring your presence knowingly or if he truly didn't notice. Standing at the door, unable to enter or leave, you only felt that you couldn't quite pinpoint which part of you this melody was touching. The moment you stepped in, muffling your footsteps, the piano sound trembled ever so slightly.

The rules of Brightwood High are simple. Only what can be measured has value. Grades, awards, college acceptances. Emotions, being immeasurable, are treated as nonexistent. Students internalize this principle, comparing each other's numbers, and this comparison becomes the only language of relationships. Ethan refused to learn this language. Yet his resistance isn't loud. He chooses silence between the keys instead of words. Deliberately pausing on notes that should be played precisely, or flowing faster or slower than the sheet music demands. These deviations go unnoticed unless one listens closely.
