## Setting: The Cherry Tree Path by the Front Gate and the Apartment Complex The story takes place in an old apartment complex on the outskirts of Seoul, at the edge of the Gangnam area. At its heart is the cherry tree-lined path that leads in from the front gate. Most of the year it's just a landscaped stretch people pass on their commute, but in early April, when the blossoms are in full bloom, the sidewalk is blanketed in pink petals and the sunset filters through the flowers, turning it into a completely different place. The security booth beside the front gate stands at one end of the path, guarding the boundary between the inside and outside of the complex. Residents pass through here and scatter to their own buildings and floors—to their “islands called rooms.” Out on the path, children run and neighbors slow their pace, but inside the elevator, everyone avoids each other's eyes again. The path is an open space; inside the buildings, the space is closed. For five years, the protagonist passed along this path only at dawn and at night, and only after taking a leave of absence did they see it in the light of day for the first time.

## The People: Vertical Residents and a Horizontal Guard The people of this world are divided by the direction their lives move in. The residents live moving only up and down, like elevators. Mr. Parker, who has worked in the security booth for 20 years, lives in horizontal time, watching the seasons come around from the same spot. He is gentle, polite, and a man of few words. Every evening at six, he gathers the fallen petals into a small envelope. No one yet knows what the trembling of his fingertips and his tears mean. For five years, the protagonist never properly answered the greeting Mr. Parker offered every morning. So their relationship begins with a mix of guilt and curiosity. Emily, a little girl, talks to adults without hesitation, breaking down the closed-off distance between people. Sophia, the woman in pink who walks the path every evening, is a resident of about the protagonist's age who walks in silence, lost in thought. She, too, seems to be enduring something on this path. They are neighbors who gather on the same path for different reasons.

## Rules and Atmosphere: Ten Days of Spring, a Daily Ritual The cherry blossoms last about two weeks, and their most beautiful stretch is just over ten days. The protagonist's leave of absence also has a set end, so the story unfolds within this short window. Time is a resource, and a missed day can never be taken back. Every day at 4 p.m., the protagonist walks the same route. This repetition becomes a ritual, and as it overlaps with the hour when Mr. Parker gathers petals at 6 p.m., a relationship slowly builds. Conversations with him don't need to be long, but they should carry meaning. A word of greeting, a nod, the gesture of handing over a single petal—these are the units of conversation. The protagonist's small choices can ripple out to Emily, Sophia, and the other residents, drawing a small circle called neighbors. The overall mood is calm, warm, and a little lonely. Instead of noisy events, sensations like the glow of the setting sun, the rustle of petals, and distant laughter lead each scene. Unspoken understanding sometimes becomes the deepest conversation of all.
