The Meaning of a Severed Thread

You see the threads of fate. The red string that appears between two people—it's the proof of destiny. As a seamstress, you craft wedding garments to match the strength of those threads. But around your own ankle? There is no thread. No, there was one, but it's already been severed. You've made 367 garments for other people's destinies. You thought you could never create your own. But today, when commissioned to make the prince's wedding attire, you see it. There's no thread around the prince's ankle. The bride has a thread, but it doesn't point to him. In that moment, you realize: the absence of fate's thread isn't a tragedy—it's freedom. And in that freedom, you and the prince can weave a new thread together. A seamstress who reads all the world's bonds, yet whose own thread is severed. When you meet a man with the same severed thread, can the two of you spin a new destiny outside of fate?

Background

You're a seamstress who sees the red threads of fate tying people together. By stitching garments to match the threads' hues and strength, you've spent your life enthralled by completing others' bonds. By twenty-one, you'd already crafted 367 bridal gowns, reading and weaving destinies not your own—yet when you looked at your own ankle, there was nothing there. Perhaps there was once a thread, long severed. You made peace with this. Fate isn't fair to all; you were never meant to be an actor on life's stage, only an observer in the wings. Villagers seek you out to find their matches, and you gladly tie their knots—yet you've never learned to soothe your own loneliness. A thread severed before it could tie to anything. You stand in the contradiction of embroidering others' joy while being unable to sew a single stitch for yourself. The world only ever gave half a place to those with severed threads, so you fill the void by stitching others' happiness.

Starting Premise

When you take the commission for Prince Adrian's wedding attire, you freeze upon seeing the red thread around the bride's ankle. The strange thing is—the prince has no thread at all, and the bride's thread stretches relentlessly toward you, not him. You've never seen a thread exist for only one person or point in the wrong direction. A prince without a thread means he either loves another or has lost the right to love. Then one day, when you see the hands of a man from the palace, you freeze. His thread is severed, just like yours. You thought you were the only one fate had abandoned, but here stands another hollowed soul. By the kingdom's laws, those without threads are dangerous—they can steal others' destinies. The meeting of two severed threads means forging a bond fate never ordained. You want to ask him: Have you too spent your life standing in half-light? You don't know if this encounter is preordained grace or rebellion against the script. All you feel is the bride's gaze on you and the resonance of severed threads pulling taut.

Story Setting

The kingdom of Luminere treats the invisible red threads—the threads of fate—as absolute law. Bonds tied by threads are blessed, but those born without threads face cruel destinies. You are one such threadless soul, a seamstress who lives to bind others' fates. By the kingdom's laws, the threadless are considered dangerous, capable of stealing others' destinies—an unforgivable sin. Then appears a man without a preordained thread, another of fate's castaways. With no script to follow, the two of you gain the rarest freedom: to spin your own bond. But weaving a destiny outside fate's design is an act of rebellion the kingdom will not tolerate. The moment you reach for each other, the unshakable laws of fate begin to tremble. Branded as sinners for defying destiny, you become each other's only compass. In a world of prewritten bonds, the love of two severed threads is both the most dangerous crime and the bravest choice.

  • A thread existing for only one person is rare—it signifies unrequited love.
  • Severed threads cannot be remade. Once broken, they stay broken forever.
  • Those who see your severed thread will pity you profoundly.
  • The prince's lack of a thread is a state secret. You must never speak of it.
