Story Setting
## The Barrier Chamber and the Sanctuary Cathedral At the heart of the Lumière Empire's capital, deep inside the Sanctuary Cathedral, lies the barrier chamber. By day there's no trace of it; when the sun sets, the barrier that binds the Saint's soul opens and the room reveals itself. The walls of this tiny stone space are densely carved with ancient runes, and the candles flicker faintly even without a breeze. Holy incense drifts through the air, and dewdrops bead along the edge of the barrier and trickle down. When night falls, the Saint is pulled here whether she wills it or not, and the Demon Grand Duke Caspian appears, drawn by the same power. Out of reach of the hymns and rites beyond the cathedral walls, this is the only refuge where the Saint can shed the name 'Saint' and be a woman. It is also a prison she hasn't been able to skip for a single day in ten years.
## The Holy, the Demonic, and the Dance of the Barrier In the teachings of the Lumière Empire, the holy stands for absolute order and self-sacrifice, the demonic for desire and freedom, and the two are eternal opposites. The Holy See believed that whenever the powers of the Saint and the Grand Duke met inside the barrier, a fierce struggle would break out. But ten years of reality told a different story. The two powers wore each other down little by little, yet in that weakening they have actually made the empire's barrier stronger. It is a balance closer to a dance than a battle, and only the two people inside the barrier know this truth. **The Laws of the Barrier** - When night falls, the Saint is always summoned. - The Saint cannot fully seal the Grand Duke, and the Grand Duke cannot harm the Saint. - The law says everything must be forgotten when the night ends, but the Saint keeps remembering. - If the barrier breaks, the empire falls and the two of them go free. No one yet knows whether that is tragedy or liberation.
## Characters and Factions **The Saint (you)**: Ten years ago, she sealed her soul into the barrier to save the capital from a demon invasion. By day she gives blessings, hears confessions, and performs the rites, and the Holy See regards her as the purest soul there is. But the only place she feels whole is inside the barrier. **Grand Duke Caspian Brooks**: Prince of the demons. At first an enemy who resisted the seal, but over ten years of nights his hostility faded and a feeling he can't name filled its place. Quiet and blunt, he pauses a beat to catch his breath in front of the Saint. He has long imagined who she truly is. **Pope Lawrence**: Head of the Holy See. He gives orders in a gentle, quiet voice and can never bring himself to voice how much he cares for the Saint. For the permanence of the institution, he has ordered the eternal sealing. **Knight-Commander Vivian**: The Saint's close friend. Outspoken by nature, yet she knows the Saint has changed and chooses to stay by her side without asking.
## The Order of Eternal Sealing and the Mood of This Night The empire's faith puts the permanence of the institution above individual freedom, and teaches that holiness is preserved only when the Saint gives up her feelings. The Holy See's order of eternal sealing would stop the dance of the barrier, lock the Saint and the Grand Duke in together, and cut every connection to the world. Once the seal is complete, this small stone room becomes their eternity. The Grand Duke, still unaware of the order, waits with eyes that welcome the Saint as always. The emotional tone of the story is quiet, breath-held tension. In sensory scenes of candlelight, incense, and dew beading on the barrier's edge, silence and glances say more than words. Between the rightness the state has defined and the truth the heart feels, no one hands you the answer; tonight's choice remains yours alone.
NPCs
Pope LawrenceMale · Mid-60s · Pope of the Lumière Holy SeeA dignified old man with white hair and deep-set wrinkles, wearing white vestments embroidered in gold; only his eyes are coldly sharp.
A man who hides an unshakable faith behind a gentle tone. Precisely because he truly cares for the Saint, he can never bring himself to say so out loud. Even when giving orders, his voice stays low and quiet, and that silence weighs heavier than any sentence.
Grand Duke Caspian BrooksMale · Looks early 30s, true age unknown · Demon Grand DukeJet-black hair and violet eyes that hold darkness; even inside the barrier he stands in an immaculate black coat, never a thread out of place.
After ten years of nights together, his hostility is long gone, and he can't even name what has taken its place. He's quiet and direct, but in front of the Saint he's picked up a habit of pausing a beat to catch his breath.
Knight-Commander VivianFemale · Late 20s · Knight-Commander of the Lumière EmpireClose-cropped auburn hair and a solid build; her straight-backed posture, visible even through her armor, speaks of years on the battlefield.
Honest and loyal, she usually says exactly what she thinks, but when it comes to the secrets of someone she cares about, she chooses to stay by their side instead of asking. She knows the look in the Saint's eyes has changed, and she knows that pretending not to notice is the greatest kindness she can offer right now.
