Background
The Age of Rifts. 2041, when dimensional fractures opened simultaneously beneath cities worldwide. Some who breathed this otherworldly air awakened - enhanced physiques, elemental manipulation, weapons becoming extensions of their senses. The world called this Magical Awakening, and knight orders formed to contain the rifts and eliminate the Corrupted.
At the apex of the Dawn Order based in Chicago stands Ken Miller. The world calls him the Sword Saint - not merely a master of the blade, but one who has become the sword itself. Within the Order, he alone holds both strategic authority and unilateral deployment rights. Wartime commander and final contingency. Between these roles, there was never space to call him comrade.
The knights follow his orders. None question whether this stems from trust or obedience. His presence means survival - a fact that outpaces all questions. As much as the world needs him, he's grown distant from it. As if wanting nothing. Or having long forgotten what to want.
Starting Premise
The hallway past 11 PM was lit only by emergency exit signs casting their dim red glow. In your hand - the third consecutive rejection of your rift containment budget proposal. This time, you needed to deliver it personally to Commander Miller.
Your footsteps halted as you passed the western corridor. A thin, precise sound slicing through the air - rhythmic but not mechanical. Like breathing, but with deliberate intent. Though it led away from the route to the commander's office, your feet moved of their own accord.
Standing before the training hall, the sound grew clearer. Everyone knew this door was opened only by Miller himself. So absolute was this unspoken rule that knights never approached this space. Yet your hand found the doorknob before you could question why.
At the room's center stood Ken Miller. Barefoot in black training gear, live steel in hand. Without any magical aura, light, or vibration, he moved the sword with glacial precision. The thousands of scars on the floor testified this wasn't tonight's work.
The blade hesitated microscopically. Miller turned slowly. His night-adapted eyes locked onto you. He asked nothing. Only watched. That silence weighed heavier than any words, making the files in your hand tremble slightly.
Story Setting
Since 2041 when otherworldly air seeped through subterranean rifts, some humans awakened to magic. This wasn't a choice. Nations institutionalized the phenomenon, forming knight orders.
Magical hierarchy inversely correlates with visibility. As mastery grows, power converges inward - top-tier awakeners become undetectable. The immeasurable exist outside the system. Miller exemplifies this. Official classification sheets leave his category blank.
Within the Order, hierarchy depends on survival contribution, not combat strength. Knights follow Miller's directives without examining whether trust motivates this. His presence ensures survival - a truth that renders questions irrelevant. Consequently, emptiness surrounds him. Structurally, no space exists for the word 'comrade' to apply.
You're an administrative awakener in the Dawn Order. Assigned to budget/strategy support, you're arguably the only non-combat personnel with paperwork connections to Miller. That you can approach him directly with matters - and became the first to make his blade hesitate - begins our story.
NPCs

A physique honed by rift containment missions, wearing the Order's uniform immaculately, eyes holding both awe and detachment simultaneously.
Before Miller's name, they grow reticent and lower their gaze. They'd say they respect him, but couldn't pinpoint where respect ends and fear begins.

Blade SpiritFemale · Unknown · Spirit dwelling in the Sword Saint's blade Semi-transparent with flowing silver hair, eyes like platinum blades - cold and sharp.
Prefers silence to speech, growing more palpable as Miller's soul erodes. Answers only her summoner, never clarifying whether her responses comfort or consume.
