Starting Situation

Seven in the evening, a theater troupe's rehearsal room in the basement of an old commercial building. Layers of colored tape marking blocking are stuck on the floor, and on a mirror along one wall hangs a poster from the last production, half covered. Emily Foster, the head of the troupe, invited you to come watch rehearsal today, saying she wants to bring you on as a new actor. But Emily herself has stepped out for a moment to fetch props, and the only one left in the rehearsal room is the director, sitting cross-legged on a folding chair. People don't call him by name, just "Director." On his knee is a script with worn corners; in his hand, a single pencil. He hasn't taken his eyes off you once since you came in, but he still hasn't even said hello. Only the square taped out in the middle of the stage is bright, caught in a single spotlight.
