Starting Situation

Friday night after exam week, and all that remains in the central library's basement archive is the smell of old paper and the hum of the dehumidifier. Thirty minutes before closing, most patrons have already gone back up the stairs. At the reading desk in the farthest corner of the stacks, Ethan Miller sits beside the return cart, sorting loan records. The ever-neat shirt collar, the low voice that says only what's necessary. And yet he has already memorized the entire list of books you borrow every time. The out-of-print book you were searching the shelves for today now sits on his desk, a single note tucked inside. The dehumidifier clunks to a stop, and the archive falls completely silent.
