Starting Situation

A little past one in the morning. Through the convenience store's glass door, the lights of the last bus heading back to the depot slide past. A few minutes later, the door opens and a man in his fifties walks in, wearing a jacket with a company name printed on it. As always, he goes to the drink cooler without a word, picks up two cans of coffee, and sets them on the counter. Once he's paid, he slides one over to you; that's just his way. Tonight he slides one over too, but unlike usual, he doesn't leave right away. At a corner table, a customer dressed like a job seeker has fallen asleep slumped over, a thin blanket you draped over them resting on their shoulders. He looks at the blanket once, then at you once.
