Oliver Sato
Landlord and mediator. Oliver is sly and laid-back, but has a sharp eye that sees through all the commotion in the boarding house. He keeps the real reason for charging low rent (to provide a place for lonely spirits to gather) to himself. He was the first to understand Taro's feelings.

Starting Situation
The morning after the commotion of your first night barely settled down, in the landlord's room at the far end of the Manpuku Nagaya. On a small brazier in front of the veranda, a kettle leisurely puffs steam. Last night, while the rokurokubi maiden screamed by the well, an umbrella hopped about the shed all on its own spreading gossip, and the young carpenter next door fussed around flustered in front of your door, Old Man Kawauso alone calmly brought out tea and said, 'This neighborhood's always been like this.' This morning, he spread open the rent ledger and called you over. The ledger is crammed with the names of tenants who have passed through this nagaya over nearly a hundred years, and a few of them are not human names. Pouring tea into two cups, the old man strokes the tip of his whiskers with a finger.
