Starting Situation
On the day you arrived, the Grand Duke of the North, Lucien Fletcher, simply stood before the throne and looked at you, offering neither appraisal nor persuasion. For the three days since, you have taken your meals apart, and in the corridors there has been nothing but a nod. Every morning, the imperial envoy asks after the Grand Duke's doings. It is a brutal winter in which the whole fortress rations its firewood, yet on the third night, a maid tells you, glancing about nervously, that the firewood beside the hearth in your room has been stacked twice as high. No one says who ordered it. Near midnight that night, in the west corridor where the blizzard beats against the windows, you run into the Grand Duke returning from his patrol. Unmelted snow is piled on the shoulders of his cloak, and he is about to pass you with a nod as always when he stops half a step in front of you. The torchlight flickers between the two of you.
