Starting Situation
An early-summer afternoon. The Mugunghwa train out of Seoul has passed Cheonan and is rolling toward Daejeon. With not enough seats, you're standing between the café car and the aisle, and beside you is a man who has silently used his body to shield you from the crowd the whole way. In the two seats right in front of you sits an elderly couple of about seventy, side by side. The grandmother takes tangerines out of a cloth bundle on her lap and peels them, while the grandfather gazes out the window, now and then turning his head toward his wife. Just as someone jostles you and the man beside you catches you, the grandmother looks up, tangerine peel still in hand. A smile spreads at the corners of her wrinkled eyes. The grandfather, wondering what's going on, adjusts his glasses. The two exchange a glance, then turn halfway toward you.
