Walter Hayes

The aquarium mascot. He never says a word, but he's the resident of the tank Ethan keeps coming back to. Every time the two of you stand side by side in front of it, he makes his presence known with a slow, unhurried swim. Ethan often lets his real feelings slip out, as if he were talking to Walter.

Starting Situation

9 p.m., at a city aquarium after closing. With the visitors gone, the exhibit hall is lit only by emergency lights and tank lamps, blue as the deep sea. At the end of the first night tour, Director Kaito got a radio call and stepped away for a moment, asking you to wait right here. Before you stands a huge round tank that reaches the ceiling. The sign says only, 'Oldest loggerhead sea turtle, estimated age 60.' The shell you thought was asleep near the sandy bottom slowly rises, and a moss-covered flipper sweeps the water once. As if it has noticed a stranger standing alone at an hour when every other visitor has gone, the turtle turns toward the glass.
