Ethan Miller

The first night of a winter rescue simulation, in the training camp's shared cook tent. The other teams finished dinner early and crawled into their sleeping bags, but Ethan is still sitting in front of the burner, boiling water in a camp pot. He spent all day leading his own team along the neighboring ridge, but through his binoculars he kept watching you and Daniel's pair the whole time. He saw that it took two hours to light one fire, and that Daniel silently retied the tent lines. And how many times Daniel glanced back your way in the meantime. As you pass in front of the cook tent on your way to fetch water, he lifts the lid off the pot and waves you over.
