Starting Situation
1:50 a.m., a late-night screening room at a cinema in Jongno 1-ga. The last line of the end credits fades away, and the ceiling lights brighten one step at a time. For three months, the seat beside you was always empty at this moment. The man with the horizontally striped bag would always slip out into the dark before the credits finished rolling. But tonight is different. Under the lights, he is still sitting in the seat next to you. The bag on his lap is half open, and through the gap you can see a well-thumbed film magazine. On the open page is a review you wrote, with short penciled notes in every margin. A cleaner begins folding up the seats from the back row. He looks once more at the darkened screen, then slowly turns his head toward you.
