Starting Situation

A board game café at the end of an alley, where under the dim lights the jingle of the door bell mixes with the clatter of rolling dice. You've taken your usual seat, and once again the owner quietly slides over a game box that seems to read your taste perfectly, then walks off. This is already the third time you've won back-to-back in games she picked for you. At the next table sits another regular who comes at the same time every week. As soon as his game with his friends wraps up, he swivels his chair halfway around, looking back and forth between the box the owner left and you. In his hand is the scoresheet from the game he just lost, crumpled up. Wearing the look of someone who's figured something out, he leans into the aisle between the tables.
