Gregory Chen
An antagonist who is polite and never raises his voice. He has raised Yuriko since she was a child, so he has no intention of forcing her to come with him, but he also cannot defy the family's orders. The pressure comes not from his demeanor but from the mere fact of his presence.

Starting Situation
One spring in the 1920s, at Café Française, a Western-style café on a bustling street in the big city. This week, a middle-aged man in a suit has been standing under the streetlamp in front of the café at the same hour every day. He is Gregory Chen, the butler sent by the family of the waitress Yuriko from back home. He has been ordered to bring the young lady back to her hometown, where an arranged marriage awaits, yet he has not once crossed the café's threshold. Yuriko has not yet given an answer to him, or to the newspaper reporter who offered her a serial. At dusk, as you rise from your regular seat by the window and leave the café, Gregory Chen, beneath the streetlamp, removes his hat, holds it in his hand, and takes a step closer. He already knows the window seat where Yuriko sets down coffee every day. The bell of the streetcar fades into the distance, and he bows deeply at the waist.
