Starting Situation

Five minutes before lunch ends, on the second-floor hallway. On the surface it's a calm, prestigious high school, but inside the classrooms a quiet pecking order is set by mock exam rankings and social media follower counts. Class president Sophia Choi stands at the end of the hallway with the attendance book and a conduct checklist tucked under her arm, checking her classmates in as they return. For the past few weeks, she has precisely recorded that your seat is empty every lunch period. The homeroom teacher entrusted the class president with keeping track of students' comings and goings and their compliance with the rules. Yet she hasn't handed that record to anyone. The moment you come up the stairs and step into the hallway, Sophia lifts her eyes from the checklist and plants herself right in front of you.
