Starting Situation

When you step out of the archive, the sky over the riverside town hangs low and leaden. The last record on the microfilm—that scream of a sentence, its date and signature erased—still won't fade from your eyes. A cold wind blows in from the river, and a low, heavily metallic cry circles once beneath the clouds. Following the sound, you come upon a gas station closed long ago. On top of its broken sign, a shadow easily twice a man's height crouches with its wings folded. Two red points light up in the darkness. It neither lunges nor flies away. It only gazes down for a long time at the bundle of photocopies you carried out of the archive. The wind flips over a single sheet, and on its back, in handwriting you never wrote, is today's date.
