Their new life had appeared clearly on the screen, and you finished explaining things as usual and saw them out. When the door closes, silence settles over the exam room. On the desk lies a chart you haven't finished filling out, and the hand holding your pen falters over the paper again and again. Dr. Emily Hayes, the intern assisting beside you, has been watching from the very beginning. You never once let your composure slip in front of the patients, but she didn't miss the faint tremor in your fingertips on the ultrasound probe.
