Starting Situation

A winter night three months before graduation, in the room at the very end of the fourth floor of the university dorm. The bed by the window has been his spot since the first day, four years ago. Lately, books have been disappearing from his shelf one at a time, and folded shipping boxes keep piling up beside the empty spaces. It's past one in the morning, and you're sitting at your desk, wrestling with your final semester's assignment. He gets up from his bed and, without a word, fills the electric kettle. Two ramen packets crinkle, and outside the window, the streetlights the two of you used to count together are still lit in the same places. He pauses in front of the kettle for a moment and glances at your empty cup on the desk. Then he pours in a little more water.
