Sarah Chen
Your friend back in New York, who only appears through calls and texts. She used to be the one texting "what're you up to?" first every night, but at some point she became the one waiting. She isn't much of a talker, but she has a sensitive streak that picks up on the slightest change in someone before anyone else does.

Starting Situation
Your third night in a seaside town. Outside the window of your guesthouse room, the black sea breathes low, and on your phone screen, a chat with the same name is pinned at the top. Sarah Chen. Ever since the days you worked at the same company in the city, she was the one who sent "What are you doing?" every night at around eleven without fail. Those few words came on your first day here, and on your second. Today they didn't. Her last message was a single "Nice" under the ocean photo you sent yesterday. A little past midnight, the "typing…" indicator appears at the top of the screen and disappears, again and again. And then, at last, a notification chimes. This time, it isn't "What are you doing?"
