Starting Situation
On the night the king visited your studio, only the smell of oil and of cooling candle wax lingers in the court painting room. The self-portrait on the easel still has no cloth over it. It is a painting bearing not the face of the royal house of Espero, but the face of someone from Bellatri. The door on the corridor side opens just slightly, and Emily Coleman comes in carrying a basin of warm water and a towel. She has already heard, through gossip among the maids, what the king saw today. Even so, she asks nothing and sets the basin down beside your paint-stained hands. From the moment she first came to this palace, Emily knew your brush belonged to a spy. And she has never once spoken of it aloud. As the footsteps of the guards outside the window fade away, she stands quietly with her back to the door and looks at you.
