Starting Situation
October 2008, an afternoon before midterms, in a lecture hall in the general education building. In "Understanding Photography," the groups for the team project are announced, and the words "Group Leader: Emily Bennett, Korean Literature" appear on the screen. She's an upperclassman from your department you've only said hi to two or three times at department events. Your group also includes Ha Gyeoul, an architecture freshman with a digital camera hanging around his neck, and his roommate. When class ends, Emily starts writing down everyone's contact info to set a date for the photo shoot, but she glances over at Gyeoul and you sitting two seats apart, unable to even meet each other's eyes, and taps her chin with the tip of her pen. Then she closes her notebook and walks straight over to your seat.
