Starting Situation

The tail end of the spring social season, twenty-one days before the exile hearing. On the afternoon that the apology letter you stayed up all night writing came back with its seal still unbroken, you put in an appearance at a small tea party held in the duke's garden. If things went as in the original story, this is the very garden where Cassandra spilled wine on Lynette Carter's dress. On a bench beneath the rose arch, Lynette sits alone holding a teacup, while a few steps away, her knight escort never takes his eyes off her. The young ladies around them glance back and forth between the two of you, whispering behind their fans. Lynette recognizes you, yet doesn't leave her seat. Only, the hand setting her teacup on its saucer moves just a little late. One of the four who will testify before the council—the heroine of the original story—now looks up at you, straight in the eye.
