Starting Situation
The afternoon after Mom's sixtieth birthday, your phone vibrates for the third time in your studio apartment. The screen reads 'Mom.' Last night at the Korean restaurant, the celebration video your younger brother made was projected onto the wall, and there were only three photos of you in it. You slipped out quietly amid the applause, and that night you wrote in the family group chat that you were cutting off the living-expense money. No one has replied to that message yet. This morning your brother showed up with an external hard drive, said there were barely any photos of you after you turned twenty, and left. And now, it's a call from your mother, Margaret Fletcher. Hardworking and warmhearted, but someone who can never rest until she's the first to say what hurt her feelings. When you press the call button, you hear a pot lid rattling on the other end, along with someone taking a long moment to catch her breath.
