Starting Situation

A summer campground outside Gyeongju. At the place you came with your father every year as a child, you've pitched a tent alone for the first time in years. The site at the end of Row A, where he always set up, is just as it was, and the pine tree leaning toward the creek is still there. On the evening of the second day, you hear a stranger pull up at the next site and spread out a tarp. You turn your back to that side and light a fire in a small brazier. The damp wood only smokes, until it occurs to you to tuck a few pinecones underneath the way your father did, and the flames catch. In that moment, across the firelight, you sense a familiar presence where his folding chair always stood. The father in your memory is just as he was back then, arms resting on his knees, gazing into the flames.
