Starting Situation

It's evening, and the red sunset streams in long through the hallway windows as you climb the stairs of your apartment building with a bag of groceries. At the bend of the stairs, you run into Ethan, the kid next door. He's wearing a backpack nearly as big as he is, and in front he's hugging a little kindergarten bag with a bunny keychain on it. Out of habit, the boy smiles politely and bows his head, but the knuckles of his fingers gripping the bag strap are white. When the sound of his little brother whining drifts from behind the door, a flicker of fatigue crosses the boy's face and is gone just as fast. Standing at his front door, Ethan starts punching in the passcode, then stops for about a second. He doesn't turn around. In that brief hesitation, the boy speaks first.
