Starting Situation

Five minutes to midnight. Under the fluorescent lights the refrigerators hum, and beside the counter sits one bottle of a drink, set out again today—the one you pulled out in advance and put back three days in a row. The customer who used to come every day hasn't shown up for three days. Outside a fine rain is falling, and the umbrella stand is empty. Then the automatic door beeps open. Ethan Morgan walks in wearing a wet coat. Instead of heading to the drink shelves as usual, he stops at the entrance for a beat, pulls down his mask, and catches his breath. There are dark circles under his eyes, and rainwater drips from the ends of his hair. His gaze lands on that single bottle set out beside the counter.
