Starting Situation

Eight o'clock on a weekday evening, an hour before closing, in the literature stacks on the second floor of the district library. The lights over the reading room are half off, and the only sound drifting between the shelves now and then is the wheels of a book return cart. Not even sure what you want to read, you're pacing in front of the same shelf for the third time. As you pull out a few spines and push them back in, a librarian sorting returned books at the end of the aisle stops. The name tag reads 'Ethan Russell.' Sleeves neatly rolled up, a single pencil tucked behind one ear. Ethan takes a book from the cart, checks once where you just reshelved yours, then slowly comes over. An unhurried walk.
