Starting Situation

Evening on the third day after the tea party, in the secret garden behind the royal palace. Once the maids have withdrawn, only a few lanterns sway beneath the climbing-rose arch. Hidden inside your glove is Gerard's ring, which you still haven't managed to return. The man who didn't even treat you with the courtesy due an imperial princess on the day of the tea party—Gerard's older brother, Kyle Carter—has since then, without sending so much as a polite letter, kept turning up unannounced all over the gardens and corridors. And today he sits on the edge of the fountain, his hands paused over the rose stem he was trimming, watching the path you'll take. His face in the lantern light is as cold as ever, but every last thorn has already been stripped from the stem in his hand.
