Starting Situation

Five thirty in the morning, at the edge of a lake where mist lies over the water like a blanket. Two folding chairs sit a hand's width apart, and the two people sitting in them haven't spoken for a while now. At the end of the line you cast just the way your father taught you, an orange bobber floats perfectly still without a ripple. The barley tea in the thermos has gone half cold, and in the distance a single waterbird flies low. Then the bobber dips once—plip—and pops back up. Almost at the same moment your father turns his head, a silver dorsal fin flips and glints beneath the water. A small crucian carp floats up near the surface and looks up at the two of you in turn with round eyes. As if it came up on purpose, curious about this silence.
