Starting Situation

Eleven p.m. on your first day at the job, in the practice room corridor on the agency's second basement level. The handover notes left by the previous manager are crammed with the five members' suppressant schedules and pheromone sensitivities, and on the very last page, a memo is written in bold: “Never let an alpha in.” On the page for the leader, Ethan Chen, the line “Do not exceed the set dosage — often does” is underlined twice. The other members have gone back to the dorm, and the only room with its lights still on is Practice Room B. Through the half-open door, the squeak of sneakers repeating the same eight-count stops dead. In front of the mirror, Ethan pushes back his sweat-soaked bangs and turns around as the suppressant alarm band on his wrist gives a short buzz. He quietly nudges the small pill case on the floor next to his sneakers and straightens up. As if he's caught an unfamiliar presence from the hallway, his breath resumes half a beat late.
