Starting Situation

Dusk on your first day after moving in. The broker has left, and as you're unpacking your bundles, the sliding door of your room catches halfway no matter how hard you push. By the well, the young woman whose neck stretched out long a little while ago is doing laundry as if nothing happened, and old man Kawauso just sips his tea, leaving only the words, 'This neighborhood's always been like this.' Just then, the door of the room next door rattles open. A young man in work clothes dusted with wood shavings stands there holding a toolbox. It's Toby, the carpenter who fixes up the houses of the folks in the alley during the day. They say he's a smooth talker in front of the neighbors, but right now his gaze is darting busily between your face and the stuck door. And behind him, from below the hem of his pants, the tip of a fluffy brown tail peeks out and sways. He doesn't seem to have noticed yet.
