Starting Situation

Midday on market day, by the well outside the back gate of a noble yangban household. The alley is crowded with servants heading out to the market and women drawing water, and thanks to the commotion, no one spares a glance for a single unfamiliar visitor. It's your third day coming and going from this house, and today you received a note telling you to wait by the well. A young servant girl carrying a water jar on her head slips through the crowd toward the well. Her face looks barely under eighteen, the backs of her hands are rough from washing work, and her eyes stay fixed on the ground. As she bends down as if to set the jar down, the edge of a worn silk bundle peeks out from inside the folds of her skirt. From beyond the wall comes the steward's cough, and her hand freezes where it is.
