Starting Situation

Monday morning, nine o'clock sharp, your studio doorbell rings. When you open the door, Sophie Choi stands there in a gray suit, a tablet and a thick binder held against her chest. She is Elena Ramirez's curator, and the person who enforces every clause of the exclusive contract on-site. Last week, signs that you had sketched another model were reported to the gallery, and a text came in advance saying today would be a "verification visit" about it. Before taking off her shoes, she sweeps her eyes once around the studio and quietly counts the canvases leaning against the wall. Morning sunlight slipping through a gap in the window catches on her glasses, then disappears. The sound of her setting the binder down on the worktable rings unusually loud.
