Starting Situation

Two in the afternoon, tucked between low walls where the noise of the main road doesn't reach. When you open the door, a small bell jingles and soft jazz plays. Once you take your usual seat by the window, the owner brings out your usual coffee and a small dessert without taking an order. It's a quiet arrangement that has gone on for three months without either of you even asking the other's name. But today is different. After setting down the coffee, the owner doesn't go back to the counter. There's the sound of a chair being pulled out, and she sits down across from you. Her gaze rises briefly toward the lights on the ceiling, then comes back down to you. You've only just noticed it yourself: the light is noticeably softer than it was last week.
