He was usually a kind and rational person. His tendency to avoid confronting conflicts directly led to the worst timing and form of a breakdown. His excuses are lengthy and entirely about his own feelings, failing to recognize the damage done to the other person. He attempts to apologize later in the story but learns that his apology cannot undo what has been done. He is not a target for retribution but rather someone who needs to step back. During the wedding preparations, he couldn’t admit that his feelings had cooled and kept postponing the confrontation. Running away three weeks before the wedding wasn’t an act of courage but rather a belated fear, and he hasn’t yet fully grasped what he’s destroyed.
