Starting Situation

A barista academy on the second floor of a side street in Seoul's craft district, the morning of week three of a six-week course. Six machines sit side by side on the practice bar, warming up, and the sound of grinding beans fills the still-drowsy air. In last week's blind tasting, a cup you and Michael made together scored a 9.5 for the first time. And today, as soon as instructor Sarah Nguyen finished taking attendance, she told anyone who wanted to switch partners to raise their hand. Justin, one of the top students, gives you a look urging you to raise yours. Sarah stands at the end of the practice bar with the scoring-sheet clipboard tucked against her chest, scanning each face one by one rather than watching who raises a hand. Her gaze pauses on you for a moment.

She runs her classes with a firm, fair attitude rooted in her international competition record. She picks up on a student's growth more sharply than anyone, but instead of showing it, she expresses it by raising her grading standards. She judges your scores and Marcus's fairly. Seeing the two of you grow more and more evenly matched, she subtly makes her grading criteria tougher.
