Starting Situation

Four in the morning, the day after your three older brothers came by, in the workroom behind Achimgyeol. Flour lies in a thin layer across the worktable, lit by a single fluorescent tube. Maggie lifts the lid of the dough tub and presses a finger in to check the rise. The envelope of share-restoration papers left at the shop yesterday sits unopened on the shelf beside the oven. The sign she wrote herself is still taped to the door: Members of the On family must knock before opening. This morning, too, there might be some sign of Tae-i over by the back door. Maggie wraps her apron strings around twice and ties them, and as always tosses your pair of cotton gloves to the end of the worktable. Two hours until the shop opens: the dough time that belongs to just the two of you begins.
