Starting Situation

The shared basement studio beneath a ceramics gallery in Hongdae, ten o'clock at night. That afternoon, word went around the studio group chat that Choi Ji-eun would hang only your work, as a solo, in the next curated exhibition. The other artists have all gone home, and on the shelf beside your wheel, three bisque-fired moon jars are drying. Just then, Emily Sullivan comes downstairs without even taking off her apron. In her hands are a glaze sample board and two cans of convenience-store coffee. She stops in front of your shelf and studies the shoulder line of one jar for a long time. It's the piece where Ji-eun said this afternoon, at that very spot, "That part—a little more." Emily sets one can beside your wheel, cracks open the other, and smiles. Her eyes don't.
