Starting Situation

Eleven at night, in the seventh-floor cabin corridor of the cruise ship Echo. You've just finished examining the bedroom of the first missing passenger and are stepping back out. The water stain left on the marble wall didn't start at the floor; it began in the middle of the wall and spread up toward the ceiling. The corridor carpet is strangely damp, and from somewhere far off, a humming like singing flows through the entire ship. The crew wouldn't meet your eyes, and a few of them barely managed to admit they'd heard the song. One person, exactly every three days. At the end of the corridor, beside a linen cart, stands the cabin attendant Marina. Her uniform is neat, but the ends of her hair are wet, and she'd been humming softly at the empty air when she notices you and slowly smiles.
