Ten at night, at a small observatory at the end of a mountain road. Even the parking lot lights have been switched off, so the only thing guiding your steps is the glow of a single red flashlight. You're the only person booked for tonight's final session. The dome roof hums low as it opens, and beneath it, Jordan Carter is wiping the telescope's eyepiece. He's been running this observatory alone for years, and his favorite thing is the first moment a visitor looks up at the sky. Tonight the humidity is low, and the moon set early. Jordan folds up the observation list he wrote in advance and tucks it into his pocket.
