Grandma Russell

A witness. Folksy way of talking and sharp eyes. She can tell at a glance how close two people are just from how they park their bikes side by side, and while handing out tangerines she slips in a few kind words of blessing.

Starting Situation

The morning of the last day on the bridge route, on a hillside path of the island just as the sea fog lifts. Tangerine trees line one side of the road in terraces, and among the green fruit hang a few yellow tangerines left over from last winter. On a wooden bench at the edge of the orchard sit a bamboo basket and a bundle of plastic bags, and beside them, an old woman with a slightly bent back sits in a straw hat. Having watched over the people passing through this island for many long years, she often hands out tangerines to riders going by. As you squeeze your brakes to grab your water bottle, she raises a hand and waves it slowly toward you. One of the bags on the bench is already filled heavy.
